Briardene Care Home is situated in a quiet suburb of Billingham

At Briardene, we provide care and support for adults aged 50 and over living with a dementia.

Briardene’s experienced team dedicate themselves to understanding the anxieties of each individual in order to provide a unique care package aimed at easing these anxieties whilst promoting positive, enriching lifestyles.

Briardene has its own internal care pathways as changes in clinical needs may be addressed within the Barchester Independent hospitals which may then mean clients can be transferred to Briardene depending on which service best meets their needs. This provides a successful management of behaviours that challenge. The decision to move clients is based on risk assessment and clinical need, and involves all relevant parties.

Our purpose-built accommodation has been specifically created using the latest innovations in dementia care research.

In 2017, we were presented with the 'Team of the Year' award at the Barchester Care Awards in recognition of all the incredible hard work we do to consistently deliver a high standard of care to those we support; and many of our staff have been named as Divisional Winners in other categories, including 'Chef of the Year', 'Nurse of the Year' and 'Registered Nurse of the Year'.

Client Group

The service supports individuals aged over 50 who are experiencing extreme anxiety surrounding their dementia journey, which can manifest itself as intense periods of behavioural challenge.

Briardene treats and supports individuals who can have numerous different mental health diagnoses. Examples of these functional mental illnesses include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, Korsakoff's, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, frontal lobe dementia, and vascular dementia.

Our approach to care

At Briardene the staff work within the philosophy of true person-centred dementia care. Our complex dementia services support individuals to make their own decisions and choices regarding daily life and social activity. Relationships are developed through a key worker approach that helps make every day meaningful for everyone, creating emotional and social attachment together. Life skills are an equally important aspect of well-being and everyone is supported in taking part in their own care.

The Briardene unit has a dedicated therapy team comprising of a therapy co-ordinator, holistic therapist and a music therapist. Individual programmes are devised to suit each client, promoting independence and wellbeing during waking moments. By using outcome-based assessments the team ensure a person is enabled, enriched and living a meaningful life unique to them.The holistic therapist provides physical and mental health support to the clients ranging from lymphatic drainage and massage to reki, talking therapies and relaxation. This holistic treatment aids in maintaining physical wellbeing and offers great emotional support.

The music therapy at Briardene encourages communication, positive interaction and further emotional support through the use of music. These therapies are delivered within a group setting or on a 1-1 basis and all staff at Briardene take an active role in activities and interactions.

Our Head Chef, Kevin Smith, was also just announced as Barchester's Chef of the Year at this years Barchester Care Awards.

Referrals

Patients are usually referred directly from an NHS Trust, social services or the two working in partnership, including joint funding of placements. Following an assessment visit a decision is made as quickly as possible.

Briardene Care Home also has its own internal care pathways. Changes in clinical need are addressed within the hospitals which may mean clients once treated in a Barchester hospital can be transferred to Briardene depending on which service best meets their needs.
